What is constructability?

Constructability is the discipline of checking whether a design and plan can actually be built — safely, in sequence, inside real plant, plot, and schedule constraints — before mobilization locks in expensive surprises. It applies to capital, brownfield, and plant work — not only outages.

Why it matters on heavy industrial work

On chemical plants, midstream facilities, refining units, and pipeline stations, the costly misses usually show up at interfaces: design vs field, construction vs operations, package scope vs means and methods, laydown vs heavy lift, bid assumptions vs buyout reality. Hard outage windows matter when the job has them — most work does not.

Before steel and craft

A constructability pass catches sequence and access problems while drawings and packages can still change.

Inside live plants

Brownfield and live-plant work needs SIMOPS awareness and decisions that fit operating-unit and access reality.

Before NTP / buyout

Bid and logistics risk is cheaper to frame early than to absorb after contractors are on site.

What a constructability review typically covers

  • Interfaces between design packages, disciplines, and contractors
  • Sequencing and path of construction under plant / ROW constraints
  • Live-plant constraints and hard windows (when the job has them) vs construction reality
  • Laydown, heavy lifts, access, and logistics
  • Bid and buyout risk before notice to proceed
